convention. . >> complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is bay area news at 7:00. good evening. it's tuesday september 4th. i'm gasia mikaelian. this is bay area news at 7:00. a chp officer is hospitalized in critical condition tonight after being shot by a motorist during a traffic stop on interstate 680 in alamo. two officers shot and killed that suspect. the top story live at the onramp at 680 tells us investigators shut down that highway for nearly eight hours snarl lg traffic throughout the region. jana. >> that's right, gasia. take a look across the street there. you can see the onramp to 680 southbound still slow going at times but okay right now. we have learns that the injured officer is married with four

children and is right now on life support. the crime scene stretched out all ways. nfthers spread out looking for evidence. from news chopper 2 you can see the suspect's jeep wrangler. trying to pull over jeep for traffic stop this morning. the suspect was a man driving alone. he stopped just south to have rut ger road onramp and officials say wen one of the officers walked up to the jeep. >> the driver then pulled out a gun and shot at that officer severely injuring him. >> investigators say the second chp officer then opened fire on the man in the jeep. the suspect was taken to john muir medical center in walnut creek. >> we do have some dash cam video we're going to analyze. >> the shooting happened during morning commute. investigators say one person called 911 while several witness remained on the scene. investigators took those witness to the nearest police station to get their statement. the chp officer who shot the suspect was also interviewed.

what was not clear is the suspect opened fire in the first place. >> we are an extended family so we feel that deeply and our thoughts and prayers are with the officer and with his family. >> the chp officer who was rushed to john muir hospital, we understand has been on the force for six years all day officers have been going to the medical center in walnut creek just to lend their support. we have also learned the chp officer lives in solano county with his family. the chp has not released the suspect's name who passed away because they say they are still trying to contact his family. reporting live from walnut creek, ktvu channel 2 news. more details on that monommental traffic jam on 680. with the highway shut down many drivers tried to use surface streets to get around the backup only to find those roads filled with traffic, as well. one traveler left san jose at

ktvu channel 2 news on facebook and give us your comment. we're fol leing wild fires that's burning out of control in county. cal fire says burning on highway 16 east of clear lake. this shows you it's not far from where the wild fire nearly burned 8 thousand acres some three weeks ago. just the past 90 minutes here we've watched the flames from trees and brush and sending a huge plume of smoke into the air. highway 16 is closed between the town of rum see and yellow county and the junction of highway 20 and 16. the fire has burned through 200 acres. . next sunday marks the second anniversary of the deadly san bruno national gas pipeline disaster. today residents and lawmakers gathered during the epicenter of the blast. they say should be held accountable for the eight lives lost and dozens of homes destroyed. >> this is years and years and years of negligence, giving money to shareholders instead of investing in infrastructure, and

pulling it back and you'll see temperatures, the heat in the central valley. so as you get through your afternoon tomorrow in hayward or oakland you'll notice 70s, mid 70s, then 80s and low 90s kind of where they were today. tropical moisture here it comes. this is the first plug. another plug working its way up wednesday at 1:00. next plug comes in you go bill what are you talking about thunderstorms? the model is not showing it, little bit here, but watching these for a lot of years any time you get this much moisture this far news, weather, and sports this late in the season there's always a chance for that especially around the higher terrain. with the fire season being what it is, you can't mess with it. we're watching it closely. you see thursday around 2:00 you get a little activity. they don't want to see that either. we'll watch it for you. right now a ton of moisture moving our way that will add a lot of humidity and a lot of fog wednesday and thursday. i hope that's all. with that said let's be prepared for perhaps a sprinkle or thundershower. 81 in napa tomorrow, 87 in
